It is a lively discussion of the basic concepts. It is an advanced treatment of research-level issues. It includes a CD containing several polished PowerPoint lectures (in English and French) suitable for a graduate course. The CD also contains both PC and MAC versions of the FROG code, ready to retrieve pulses in the lab or just to learn how FROG works.

Notes: Ryan says he's at full strength

DUNEDIN, Fla. -- B.J. Ryan didn't hold anything back. Toronto's closer cruised through a bullpen session at Knology Park on Tuesday and informed the Blue Jays afterward that he was at full strength.

"He let it go today," Toronto pitching coach Brad Arnsberg said. "We asked him if he feels game-ready and he said, 'Absolutely.'"

First things first, though. On Thursday, the Blue Jays will have their $47 million stopper make a one-inning appearance in a Double-A game at Toronto's Minor League complex. If that goes well, Ryan will pitch against Cincinnati in Saturday's Grapefruit League finale.

Ryan, who had 38 saves and a 1.37 ERA in 2006, last appeared in a spring game on March 11, when he first felt some soreness in his lower back. The left-hander informed Toronto's medical staff of the injury the following day, and the team temporarily pulled the plug on his throwing schedule.

Thirty-one Somali lawmakers fired over absenteeism

Somalia's transitional parliament has fired its former speaker and 30 other lawmakers for failing to attend sessions in recent months, a lawmaker confirmed on Wednesday.

Awad Ashara, the chairman of the parliamentary foreign relations committee, said the lawmakers were fired for failing to attend sessions in recent months as the government moves to assert its control of the legislature.

The parliament warned absent lawmakers last month that they would lose their seats if they did not begin showing up for parliamentary sessions.

Those fired Tuesday include Sharif Hassan Sheik Aden, who was removed as speaker in January for holding unauthorized negotiations with the government's Islamist rivals.

"All those parliamentarians removed are allied to the former Speaker Sheikh Aden and are currently out of the country.

Doctors, dentists say growth in cosmetic procedures comes from ...

In an era when wrinkles and imperfect teeth are quickly becoming pass, increasing numbers of doctors and dentists are jumping on the quest-for-youth bandwagon, offering patients an expanding menu of age-concealing cosmetic procedures.

Going to the dentist for a routine cleaning? You're likely to walk out with a pamphlet on tooth whitening. Seeing the dermatologist for your annual skin-cancer check? Chances are you'll leave with brochures on Botox, microdermabrasion, wrinkle fillers and laser treatments.

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, cosmetic procedures have been on a steady rise since 1992, with 240,000 more minimally invasive procedures done in 2005 than 2004.

The most recent ASPS data lists the top five minimally invasive procedures of 2005 as Botox, microdermabrasion, laser hair removal, injections of fillers made of hyaluronic acid (including Restylane) and chemical peels.

No Need To Go Under The Knife - Pharma Has You Covered

Millennium Research Group (MRG) has conducted a detailed analysis of surgical procedures in its US Surgical Procedure Volumes 2007 report, which is intended to serve as a valuable tool to identify opportunities in the surgical space for pharmaceutical companies. More patients prefer drugs rather than going under the knife in an invasive surgical procedure and innovative pharmaceutical companies are meeting this need through new drug therapies.

"There is tremendous opportunity for pharmaceuticals to target the surgical space," says Adrienne Lovink, Manager at MRG. "For example, in the cardio space drugs such as Lipitor have served as the first line of treatment for cardiovascular patients and have prevented patients from going under the knife."

Stress urinary incontinence (SUI) is another treatment shifting over to drugs.
