Bring on the Botox, say India's affluent women

MUMBAI (Reuters Life!) - Care for some freshly squeezed juice with your Botox? Fancy a shiatsu massage to soothe the nerves before the needles prick?

India's first "Botox Lounge" opened in Mumbai recently, offering the city's rapidly growing tribe of eternal youth seekers a spa-like setting where doctors banish signs of age.

"The lounge doesn't have a trace of a hospital's look or feel," said the venue's promoter, Dr. Debraj Shome.

While Botox and other treatments, including facelifts and cosmetic surgery, are commonplace in the West, many Indians are experimenting with these procedures for the first time.

As incomes surge among India's middle and upper classes, more people are clamouring for beauty services, including some that would have been inconceivable and unaffordable a few years ago.

Pearle Vision founder, Pittsburgh native, had eye on future

Stanley Pearle might never have begun a nationwide chain of vision centers if it had not been for his $12-a-week job at a Downtown wholesale jeweler during the dark days of the Depression.

Pearle was a sales trainee for Grafner Brothers in 1936, selling merchandise to the region's retail jewelry stores that typically housed optical departments, too, because glasses at the time were considered accessories.

It wasn't the sparkle of diamonds and fine watches that caught his eye -- fresh from Schenley High School in Oakland. It was the optometrists who gave the exams and sold the eyeglasses. Pearle talked with them, observed their work and opted to pursue a career in optometry. The prospects and money the profession provided convinced him to make a change, despite his boss' offer of a generous raise -- to $25 a week.

RegeneRx Says It Files IND With FDA To Commence Phase 2 Ophthalmic ...

(RTTNews) - Regenerx Biopharmaceuticals Inc. (RGN | charts | news | PowerRating) said it has filed an Investigational New Drug Applications with the U.S. FDA requesting permission to begin a Phase 2 clinical trial to evaluate the safety and wound healing efficacy of a Thymosin beta 4 (TB4 | charts | news | PowerRating) eye drop formulation in patients recovering from ophthalmic surgery.

The company said it may initiate the study 30 days after filing the IND if it does not otherwise hear from the agency.

The Phase 2 ophthalmic trial will enroll diabetic patients undergoing vitrectomy surgery who have a small flap removed from their corneas during surgery.

RegeneRx's focus will be to determine whether a TB4-based eye drop is as effective in treating corneal wounds in humans.
