Premier lauds London's health-care 'renaissance'
London's sick are getting surgery and treatment faster since his Liberal government was elected, Premier Dalton McGuinty declared on a campaign-style stop in the city yesterday. The province has pumped $160 million more into the London health-care system since 2003, resulting in reduced wait times for surgery, he said at St. Joseph's Health Care London. That money has resulted in 33 full-time nurses hired, lower cataract and cancer surgery wait times, 14 new medical school spaces and the launch of $350 million in hospital building projects, McGuinty said. "There is a virtual renaissance taking place in the health care system in the community of London," he said. "We are making real progress." While the city's health care system is still challenged by a shortage of 100 acute-care beds, wait times for other surgeries persist and delays in city emergency rooms, progress has been made in most health care areas, he said.
Women's lacrosse is well on their way to a successful season
This year, in keeping with tradition, they have a winning record and are considered a threat to every team in their conference. They also have unity, forged by a spring break trip to Florida and an emphasis on passing in games.
The team has made it to the PAC Championship seven out of the past eight years. Interestingly, every PAC tournament brought the lady Eagles face-to-face with Cabrini.
Last year, they won the championship and advanced into the first round of the NCAA tournament. The team's 7-2 record and the maturing skills of the players indicate that the same may happen this spring.
"The overall experience of the NCAA tournament was incredible and is motivating us to do it again," senior captain Kate Hoy said.
Assistant coach Rachel Lenzo, an '04 Eastern alumna who played for the Eagles as a student, said that there is a big disparity between the talent level inside the conference and the skills the team encounters at the tournament.
NHS London - delivering private health
NHS LONDON, the biggest of the strategic health authorities, is full of voices standing up for private profit in the health service. The chief executive is management consultant Ruth Carnall. She used to be non-executive director of Care UK, a private company presently involved in negotiations over taking over primary care services in London. These negotiations will be supervised by Ruth Carnall. Blair's health adviser Paul Corrigan is NHS London's new director of strategy and commissioning. He is a fan of foundation hospitals and privately run independent treatment centres that carry out routine hip, knee and cataract operations for profit within the NHS. That is yet another champion of private profit in the health service. So will be Anthony Sumara, NHS London's Turnaround director, the man who will tackle the debts of the capital's hospitals.
