| Is Barack Black Enough? That's Not The Point.
The 2008 presidential candidate's background has become a media-manufactured obstacle, while bringing the idea of defining "blackness" to the main stage. Over the past few months, one question has loomed over Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama's head: "Is he black enough?" Any query attributing to Obama's blackness in many ways parallels to the proposition that Bill Clinton is America's closest thing to having a black president. Even if the public doesn't necessarily know what this question means, common sense still makes them aware of its implications. The persistence to which Obama's blackness has been questioned, so early in the 2008 presidential campaign, reflects the white media's relentless interest to define blackness, as much as it unveils an underlying political agenda.
Q extradition: CBI crosses first hurdle in Argentina
NEW DELHI: CBI on Friday claimed to have crossed the first hurdle in its effort to bring back elusive Italian businessman and Bofors case accused Ottavio Quattrocchi. It informed the Supreme Court that the Argentine government has found India's request for his extradition to be in order. "We had made a request for Quattrocchi's extradition. The Argentine foreign affairs ministry and the public prosecutor scrutinised the request and has found it to be in order," additional solicitor-general (asg) Gopal Subramaniam informed a Bench comprising Justices C K Thakker and Tarun Chatterjee. The request is now before the federal court of first instance at Eldorado, which did the preliminary hearing on March 23, he said, adding, the process for identification of the accused has been completed.
Driver in deadly crash out on bail
Two miles and 43 years. That is the distance that separates the deadly accident police say Roberto P. Vellanoweth caused Monday while driving drunk, and the 1964 wreck that killed his father. Both accidents continued to haunt family members Wednesday, the day Vellanoweth bailed out of the Sacramento County jail on a $250,000 bond. Police said his blood-alcohol level measured 0.16 percent, twice the legal limit in California. Relatives of the three women and a baby killed Monday in the 3:59 p.m. crash expressed outrage that Vellanoweth was allowed to go home while the bodies of the victims were still in the morgue. .
