| Packing the pews for movie on war
The congregants' bewildered expressions are caught on tape as they are extras in "The War Prayer," a 15-minute short film shot Saturday at the Castro Valley Performing Arts Center. The auditorium was transformed into a mega-church with stencils of doves and crosses projected on the wall and the American flag waving on screens in the background. "We're trying to get people to think about whether religion is a reason to go to war," said producer Noah Veneklasen. Lyceum Films and Muse Media Center, both of Emeryville, along with 70 film professionals volunteered their time to shoot the film digitally and with two video cameras, rather than on film. "So you feel like you are observing a piece of something from real-life experience?" Veneklasen said. It will be crafted in two cuts, one for YouTube.com and the other for film festivals.

MPs pass bill for eye protection law
THE National Assembly has unanimously passed a bill to regulate eye services and save sight. Sellers of substandard glasses would be fined a maximum of 10m/- or five years imprisonment when the bill becomes law. Tabling the bill in the House yesterday, the Minister for Health and Social Welfare, Prof David Mwakyusa, said the government would take stern measures against retail shops, supermarkets, itinerant traders and other business people who sell spectacles haphazardly. He said the people would be enlightened on the perils of using substandard spectacles and that the government would cooperate with stakeholders such as Lions Club International, World Vision and Vision 2020 to save sight especially in villages where poor sight is often associated with aging.
