The public is invited to share ideas for West Virginia's future with Gov. Joe Manchin and members of his cabinet and senior staff, along with the Vision Shared leadership, at a public meeting April 24 in Logan. "We want to hear your solutions for a better West Virginia," says an announcement promoting the meeting. "Gov. Manchin and a Vision Shared invited you to Take a Seat at the Table' as they listen to your ideas for West Virginia's future." The meeting will be from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Chief Logan Lodge and Conference Center. It is one of a series of meetings around the state that began in January 2006. Vision Shared is the state's economic development strategy. The goals of A Vision Shared include identifying initiatives that need to be strengthened and establishing performance measures to gauge success in creating a new West Virginia economy.
Seeing in a Whole New Way
John Montante suffered from glaucoma for many years before undergoing medical procedures that eventually led to cornea scarring. The 70-year-old Moorpark resident lost complete vision in his right eye nearly four years ago and has since undergone two human tissue cornea transplants. His body rejected both. "Things just started getting blurry each time, and it was as though I was looking through fog," Montante said. On Wednesday afternoon, Montante became the first person to undergo an artificial cornea transplant at Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital and the fourth person in the greater Los Angeles area to receive the procedure, according to hospital spokesman Terry Kanakri. The surgery was approved by the FDA about three years ago, and there have only been approximately 450 AlphaCor artificial corneal implants performed worldwide, Kanakri said, citing statistics provided by the manufacturer, Addition Technology Inc.

Study: Glaucoma symptoms in some Chinese men may be due to myopia
Some Chinese men diagnosed with glaucoma or suspected glaucoma who do not show disease progression may actually have glaucoma-like symptoms caused by myopia, according to a study by Stanford University researchers. "Patients in such a group should probably not be treated as aggressively as those with [primary open-angle glaucoma] and in some cases should probably not receive any IOP-lowering therapy," the study authors said. "Surgical therapy, in particular, should be avoided in such individuals." Amish Doshi, MD, and colleagues reviewed medical records of 16 Chinese men who had ocular symptoms suggestive of glaucoma at an average age of 38.9 years. Upon examination, average IOPs ranged from 13.5 mm Hg to 17.9 mm Hg, and 56.3% of patients were using IOP-lowering medications.
